My grandmother was widowed at an early age and was left with 7 children. To make ends meet, all the children had to work in the factory. My father would go to school in the evening. He realized all too well how important it is that children have the opportunity to develop. When the time came for my brother and I to go to college, our father worked at his employer during the day and in our attic in the evenings, doing the bookkeeping for all kinds of clients. This made it possible to pay for our studies and even the rent of our student rooms.
This painting depicts the attic stairs that were folded down every evening. The light from the attic shines down through the open hatch. Father works for us while we sleep. My father's sweet face is depicted on the left of the painting.
When I made this painting there was a storm in the street. The next day the neighbor came to our door with a bunch of fallen lilac branches, which we put in a vase. That vase intersects with the story that had already been painted.
Father is painted on a 40x50 cm canvas, framed and ready to hang upon arrival. The painting is signed on the front and a Certificate of Authenticity will be included.
